Dreamweaver

Macromedia, producers of the excellent Dreamweaver used to make this website. Boy is this a steep learning curve. But the simple results shown here are only the tip of the iceberg and there is no limit to the design and effects that you can incorporate into your website if you have the time and patience to learn about the product. I did it because I wanted the challenge of learning how to do it, but there are much easier template-driven web-designer software packages out there which will do just as good a job, if less individually. Useless manual and awkward on-line help. Buy a book.

Adobe

Producers of Photoshop and of Acrobat Reader. Both are excellent products. Almost everyone has access to Acrobat Reader and thus PDF files are a great way of sending information in the page and text formatting of your choice. Photoshop is great, if a little slow, at making buttons but is also great on post-production of pictures and preparation of both for the web.

Books

For a list of books that may be helpful. I must admit that either Dreamweaver MX for Dummies or Dreamweaver MX the Missing Manual will get you up and running but they do depend on you using a lot of Macromedia's stuff and so skimp a little on the cheaper (and often easier) ways of doing the same thing. The individual books are alright on their own, but are more useful in combination. Also, although Fireworks gets you the same results so much quicker than Photoshop, it produces a lot more code for the browser and thus potentially producing a slower dowload.

Complementary Medicine

I feel that Complementary Medicine has had far too much exposure than a pseudo-science deserves. While I understand people reaching for cures where conventional medicine has failed, I cannot see how they can look to TOTALLY unproven drivel in cases where proper and repeatable research has shown clear benefits from conventional medicine. If you want further information and EVIDENCE (not a word often used by Complementary Practitioners) try the quackwatch.org site. It really is fascinating what people will fall for. Try a devastating article on Homeopathy or a slightly less well argued but still valid destruction of Accupuncture.

Apple Computer

I used an Apple iMac 1GHz 17" to produce the site. I use PCs with windows 2000 at work and the Apple is so much nicer to work on. There isn't the base of cheap software but the machine is robust, never crashes and is quick. the display is beautiful and the machine itself looks great. Safari is quicker than Explorer and displays frames in a nicer way so make sure that you're proofing your pages in Explorer as well.
